United Way of Winneshiek County is a local nonprofit organization committed to improving the lives of individuals and families throughout our community. With a core mission focused on education, financial stability, and health, we work in partnership with businesses, nonprofits, volunteers, and donors to tackle the most pressing challenges and create meaningful, lasting change.
For over 40 years, we have provided leadership and mobilized resources to ensure that everyone in Winneshiek County has access to the opportunities and support they need to thrive. Board Structure
The United Way of Winneshiek County Board of Directors is composed of the Executive Committee and General Board Members, who work collaboratively to fulfill the organization’s mission.
The Executive Committee provides leadership and strategic oversight and includes the following positions: President, Past President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Financial Secretary.
In addition to the Executive Committee, General Board Members play a vital role by supporting the committee in advancing the goals and initiatives of United Way of Winneshiek County.
The Board of Directors is composed of individuals who represent diverse elements of the community, including taxpayers, donors, users of community services, and individuals affiliated with agencies and organizations serving Winneshiek County. This diversity ensures that the board reflects and responds to the needs and perspectives of the entire community.
Board Terms and Service Limits
Board members are elected to serve three-year terms, beginning on January 1st of the calendar year. Individuals may serve up to two consecutive terms if they choose to continue. After serving two consecutive terms (a total of six years), board members are required to take a one-year break before being eligible for re-election.
If a board member is unable to complete their term, they are responsible for helping to identify a replacement to serve the remainder of their term. The replacement individual is eligible to serve their own full term following the completion of the partial term, if re-elected by the board.
Meeting Attendance
Board members are required to attend five scheduled meetings per calendar year. Meetings are held at 12:00 PM on the third Thursday of the month in the following months: January, February, May, August, and October. If a board member is unable to attend a meeting, advance notice must be given to the Board President by emailing info@unitedwaywinnco.org.
Committee Participation
In addition to attending meetings, all board members are expected to actively serve on at least one committee—Allocations, Events, or Campaign. Committee assignments will be designated by the Board President during the annual meeting each year. Prior to the meeting, communication will occur with board members to confirm or determine committee placement for those not currently assigned.
Committee assignments will continue on a year-to-year basis unless a change is requested by the board member or initiated by the Board President or Executive Committee. Board members interested in serving on an additional committee are encouraged to do so by communicating their interest to the Board President or the respective Committee Chair.
Committee Descriptions
Allocations Committee
The Allocations Committee oversees the distribution of United Way funds to partner agencies and programs. Members review agency applications and evaluate outcomes to ensure resources are used effectively and align with community needs. This committee typically meets several times annually during the allocations cycle (late summer/early fall).
Events Committee
The Events Committee focuses primarily on organizing and executing United Way’s annual Golf Tournament, held each August, which serves as one of the organization’s major fundraising and community engagement events. Members assist with securing sponsorships, coordinating teams and logistics, soliciting prizes or in-kind donations, and providing on-site support the day of the event. The committee may also assist with additional events or outreach efforts throughout the year as needed. Meetings are held periodically leading up to the tournament, with increased frequency during the summer months.
Campaign Committee
The Campaign Committee provides leadership and direction for the annual fundraising campaign. Members help identify and engage potential donors, support workplace campaign efforts, and assist with marketing and outreach strategies. Meetings occur regularly during the campaign season (typically early spring to early summer) with occasional check-ins throughout the year.
Annual Golf Outing Participation
All board members are required to work at least one shift during the annual golf outing, held each August. This event is critical, as it funds the organization’s annual operating costs, allowing 100% of campaign contributions to be allocated directly to the agencies that apply for funding. If a board member is unable to work a shift, they must instead assist with securing raffle prizes for the event, under the guidance of the event's committee chair.
